[ below statement comes from Peacemakers from fourteen different countries who number
among the approximately 400 internationals currently doing solidarity work
in Baghdad (about 30 with the Iraq Peace Team).]
March 13, 2003
Dear Citizens of the world,
We are sending this appeal from Baghdad even though it seems that an
American attack is a question of days, if not hours.
We are individuals from all parts of the world, in solidarity with the Iraqi
people. We are working here for peace.
The governments which wish to involve us in this unjust and criminal war do
not represent us. We know that we represent the vast majority. War can be
avoided. If civil society demands it, her voice must be heard.
The nonviolent, creative civil disobedience initiatives, like the general
strike in Europe, and all forms of moblisation, together will overturn the
politics of military and economic logic which currently operate.
What is at stake is greater than a simple gesture of solidarity, greater
than the beginning of a millenium marked by a terrible institutional crime.
What is at stake is the peaceful coexistence of all the peoples of the
world. In our places of origin, and around the planet.
A civil and just society is possible in this world.
Let it be.
